Back in August 1991, singer John McCrea, who was said to have "grown tired of Sacramento's coffeehouse circuit", formed a band and later settled on naming themselves Cake. The band says they didn't actually mean the food confection, instead they meant it "like when something insidiously becomes a part of your life...[we] mean it more as something that cakes onto your shoe and is just sort of there until you get rid of it". True enough, the band has a knack of coming up with ultry catchy infections melodies and rhythms that is sticky like icing to a cake. Once you lick it, you're hooked to Cake's concoction of witty, humorous and sarcastic lyrics, deadpan vocal rendition laid on a bed of tight and hook laden, compelling rhythms.
Cake initially captured the attention of mainstream rock when they released their first single "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle" which managed to climb to number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks music chart. This single was taken from their independently recorded and released album "Motorcade of Generosity" which they initially sold and peddled from their van, then lo and behold - it was named one of the best indie releases of 1994 by Pulse!, then garnered a nomination from the Bammy Awards in the category of "Outstanding Debut Album". Their sophomore album "Fashion Nugget" spawned the single "I Will Survive", a cover of the Gloria Gaynor original, which Gaynor branded as her least favorite version. However, audiences were obsessed with the band's take, driving the album to achieve gold in 1996 and platinum in 1997.
Cake's subsequent album releases "Prolonging the Magic" (1998), "Comfort Eagle" (2001), and "Pressure Chief" (2004), skyrocketted to the charts, particularly boosted by singles like "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", "Never There", "Let Me Go". These were the times when Cake hit number 1 and placed on the top 10 of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks charts. The music press raved over them as The Houston Chronicle described it as "Cake at its best", while a review from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution hailed the album's songs as "among the best of the band's career".
Music critics either love 'em or hate 'em. Cake often got mixed reviews, but their growing album sales and their ever-expanding fanbase are clear indications that Cake has become a rock and roll force to reckon with. Rock fans have their staple of classic favorites, but Cake has positioned themselves to be that band where a rock fan always makes room for dessert.
