It’s certainly a shame that UB40 had to drop out almost last minute from this event. At the same time, bringing in The English Beat to headline the event was a masterful move from the organizers. You could argue that The English Beat is more similar to Common Sense and Smoke & Mirrors Sound System than UB40 is. The English Beat leans a lot more into that reggae music. When they hit the saxophone from the stage, literal chills are going to be running down your spine. Of course, by this time, you’ll already be in a perfectly happy mood, grinning from ear to ear. The music on this night may not be the only thing that’s going to put you in this mood. That’s part of the point of the event! Come out and chill with some friends; in fact, it could be one of those concerts where the old and the new generations unite.
If you were around in the 80s and 90s, and you hit up surf bars around that time, there’s a good chance that you saw Common Sense playing live locally! When they got off the stage, the DJ hit you with “Tears of a Clown” from The English Beat. Definitely, The Beat didn’t necessarily make these songs with the local surfer culture in Southern California in mind. They fit like a glove, though. Maybe it’s not that easy today to find these beachside bars that are playing this type of music. Generations will unite because some people will be looking to relive the glory days of some of these bands. These beats, though, are universal, and they still carry deep roots here in SoCal.
