Ask any Gen-Xer; they've got The Psychedelic Furs is their laundry list of songs. Then check Gen Z's or Gen Alpha's playlist; chances are, they jam to the Furs' songs, which they may have discovered through soundtracks of Netflix's series "Stranger Things" or the coming-of-age movie "Call Me By Your Name". Their music has transcended generations and has become a visceral element of pop culture.
The Psychedelic Furs was formed in 1977, in London, England, by lead vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar. The band emerged from the UK post-punk scene, initially getting attention at college and alternative radio. The Psychedelic Furs' self-titled debut album charted in the UK and parts of Europe. In 1981, the release of their succeeding album "Talk Talk Talk" found success in the US with the singles "Dumb Waiters" and the original version of "Pretty In Pink". But it wasn't until the release of their next album, "Forever Now," that spawned their first US Billboard Hot 100 single, "Love My Way". Then, The Psychedelic Furs have seen more and bigger chart action as they released their global chart-topping songs like "The Ghost In You" and "Heaven". By 1996, John Hughes circled back and pulled a song from their debut album to become the title track of his brat-pack movie entitled "Pretty In Pink". Both the film and the song achieved massive success, with the soundtrack selling platinum and making it The Furs' biggest career hit. With a wave of hits in the 80s that impacted globally, The Psychedelic Furs officially went on hiatus in 1992. In 202, the band resumed touring and released their long-awaited album "Made of Rain", which charted heavily and ranked as their second highest charting album. The Psychedelic Furs thrive in live concert stages and continue to actively tour to this day.
